The Coldspring headquarters, a primary natural stone manufacturing facility and bronze foundry, is located in Cold Spring, MN, but our footprint extends far beyond Minnesota. Coldspring continues to thrive through creativity, diligence and determination.<\/p>\n<h3>Timeline: A History of Ingenuity and Adaption<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1880<\/h4>\n<p>Henry Alexander, a Scottish stone-cutter at the age of 32, arrives in America.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1886<\/h4>\n<p>Henry Alexander marries Maggie Milne. They settle in Rockville, Minnesota and have six children: Nellie Jean, Patrick Henry, William Milne, Isabelle Watt, Marion Gregg and John Cooper.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1890<\/h4>\n<p>Henry and seven partners form the Rockville Granite Company.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1898<\/h4>\n<p>Henry becomes sole owner of the Rockville Granite Company, and our legacy begins.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1900<\/h4>\n<p>Rockville Granite begins the century with a contract to fabricate the columns for the rotunda of the new Minnesota State Capitol Building.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1913<\/h4>\n<p>Henry Alexander dies. Wife Maggie and son Pat take over the business.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1917<\/h4>\n<p>Pat leaves to fight in World War I, Maggie Alexander dies and Maggie\u2019s son John returns from college to carry on the business.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1919<\/h4>\n<p>After Pat returns from the war, John and Pat Alexander consider Cold Spring, Minnesota as a new location for their granite company. The business community offers financial support.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1920<\/h4>\n<p>Construction of new plant begins in Cold Spring, with emerging technologies and advanced production line methods implemented.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1921<\/h4>\n<p>The company acquires Diamond Pink\u00ae quarry \u2013 the first major job is the Stearns County Courthouse six columns.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1924<\/h4>\n<p>Company name is changed to Cold Spring Granite Company.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1927<\/h4>\n<p>John Alexander develops plan to pursue more monument business, opens Chicago sales office and hires first national sales manager.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1928<\/h4>\n<p>John Alexander becomes a single parent after the death of his wife, Alice.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1929<\/h4>\n<p>Cold Spring Granite owns four granite quarries and posts record sales of $1.3 million.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1931<\/h4>\n<p>The Great Depression hits home: Chicago office closes, sales manager is laid off and revenues fall for the first time.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1939<\/h4>\n<p>Cold Spring Granite recovers completely; revenues return to pre-Depression levels.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1942<\/h4>\n<p>The John Clark Granite Company in Rockville, Minnesota, is purchased by Cold Spring Granite. Cold Spring Granite begins building ship components for the war effort.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1945<\/h4>\n<p>Company returns to granite work as the war winds down.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1948<\/h4>\n<p>Pat Alexander dies at age 57; John Alexander becomes the company\u2019s president.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1950-1962<\/h4>\n<p>Years of acquisition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Granite Mountain, Marble Falls, TX<\/li>\n<li>Pyramid Granite Works &amp; Royal Granite, St. Cloud, MN<\/li>\n<li>Raymond Granite Company, Raymond, CA<\/li>\n<li>Melrose Granite, St. Cloud, MN<\/li>\n<li>Lake Placid Granite, Au Sable Forks, NY<\/li>\n<li>Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, Canada<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1951-1952<\/h4>\n<p>Company again retools and returns to war work during the Korean Conflict.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1953<\/h4>\n<p>Granit Bronz is born as Cold Spring Granite enters the bronze business to supply markers for the new memorial parks opening across the country.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1954<\/h4>\n<p>Work begins on the new U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1962<\/h4>\n<p>Royal and Melrose Granite companies merge into one to create efficiencies.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1964<\/h4>\n<p>An 11-story mosaic mural at the University of Notre Dame is completed.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1976<\/h4>\n<p>An unprecedented boom in office building construction begins. This significantly expands the granite industry, as granite becomes the preferred material.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1978<\/h4>\n<p>John Alexander\u2019s son Pat travels to Europe with company engineers to view granite operations and technology, and develops a vision for upgrading operations.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1983<\/h4>\n<p>Tom Alexander retires; Patrick D. Alexander becomes President of Cold Spring Granite and begins rebuilding the company with new technology to make it more competitive.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1985<\/h4>\n<p>Cold Spring Granite acquires red granite quarry in Fredericksburg, TX.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1985<\/h4>\n<p>Work begins on the Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial to be constructed in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1987<\/h4>\n<p>The new Granite West plant designed for mass production of thin granite for building products opens.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1988<\/h4>\n<p>Capitol Marble and Granite, Granite Shoals, TX is acquired, adding seven more quarries.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1995<\/h4>\n<p>Korean War Memorial, Washington, D.C. is dedicated.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1996<\/h4>\n<p>A second manufacturing facility is opened next to the Granite West plant for monument production. Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial is dedicated. Cold Spring Granite receives ISO 9001 certification. Pat Alexander becomes Chairman of the Board and CEO, and names Patrick J. Mitchell president and COO of the company.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1998<\/h4>\n<p>LEAN principles are adopted using Toyota\u2019s Kaizen methodology, and a continuous improvement promotions office (CIPO) is introduced as a learning and doing function.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">1998<\/h4>\n<p>The first phase of a new foundry for finishing bronze memorials is completed on the west campus, with a second phase to follow in 2002. Plans are made to add additional facilities and eventually consolidate operations on this campus over the next 15 years.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2000<\/h4>\n<p>Company focus is to grow. Organizational changes are made to set up vertical business units with singular responsibility for both selling and operations, and a plan to enter into the rapidly expanding countertop business begins.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2000<\/h4>\n<p>Opening of the Mesabi Black\u00ae and Lake Superior Green\u00ae quarries.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2005<\/h4>\n<p>Plans are made to accelerate the consolidation from downtown Cold Spring to the new campus 2 1\/2 miles west of Cold Spring to leverage LEAN improvements, reduce costs and increase efficiencies. Multi-year, multi-million dollar IT initiatives are started to convert legacy systems to updated Oracle-based information systems.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2006<\/h4>\n<p>The majority of the company\u2019s operational consolidation in Cold Spring is complete, with the office, support services and the quarry system to come the following year. The move to expand beyond granite into limestone and other materials is begun with the introduction of Kasota Valley\u00ae Limestone.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2006<\/h4>\n<p>Introduction of several new product lines, design series and merchandising systems accelerates the growth of the bronze business.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2007<\/h4>\n<p>The move into a new LEED Gold certified office headquarters is completed in November, with the support services move completed the following spring.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2008<\/h4>\n<p>Texas facilities are consolidated and an initiative is established to focus on better utilization of resources, increase innovation and establish new business opportunities for the quarry materials business unit.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2010<\/h4>\n<p>The Adams Private Estate becomes a signature project. Mr. Adams is the owner of the Tennessee Titans NFL franchise.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2010<\/h4>\n<p>Continued emphasis on consolidation, lean management, leadership development, collaboration and teamwork, and technology. Changes are made to improve technology, efficiency and capabilities.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2011-2012<\/h4>\n<p>Completion of Ralph Carr Colorado Judicial Center and MLK Memorials, both signature projects. The company expands further into limestone, sandstones and other resource alternatives. Opening of Echo Lake quarry, Diamond Equipment expansion and start of World Trade Center project.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2013<\/h4>\n<p>Growth initiatives are beginning to take hold. Quarry materials including jetty, rip-rap and aggregates improve international block sales. The strategic rebranding of Cold Spring Granite to Coldspring has begun.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2013<\/h4>\n<p>Rose Alexander passes away at the age of 94, signaling the end of an era of the second generation Alexander family.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2014<\/h4>\n<p>Coldspring is awarded a patent for a new laser technology for its Expressions in Bronze\u00ae offering: U.S. Patent No. 8,720,527.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2016<\/h4>\n<p>Coldspring is awarded ANSI\/NSC 373 Certification Gold Fabricator for Cold Spring, MN headquarters and Platinum Quarrier for\u00a0<a draggable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/coldspringusa.com\/products\/mesabi-black\/\">Mesabi Black\u00ae<\/a>, <a draggable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/coldspringusa.com\/memorial_products\/charcoal-black\/\">Charcoal Black\u00ae<\/a> and <a draggable=\"false\" href=\"https:\/\/coldspringusa.com\/memorial_products\/rockville\/\">Rockville\u00ae<\/a> quarries.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2016<\/h4>\n<p>Acquisition of Stone Panels International LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coldspring.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"border\">2017<\/h4>\n<p>John Mattke steps down as President of Coldspring and assumes a new role as a member of the Coldspring Board of Directors and President of Stone Panels International LLC.
